THE WORD

Another few weeks, another update from the most exciting place in the world.

So what's good, folks? I do have some newz from the last time we "spoke."

I got a call from the VP of Sound Publishing who wanted to know if I needed more hours. I said yes, so she offered me a position in their marketing department at the main office on the Island. I accepted and now I work from 8 to noon weekdays as a marketing assistant.

It's not a bad job, as I have to file various reports and do some paperwork here and there, along with filing and finding cheap flights for my co-workers and whatever else is thrown my way. Plus everyone is really cool to work with, which is bigger than money to me. It's all women in marketing, though, so I don't know if I'll catch the brunt of a "men suck!" bitchfest anytime soon. But we shall see.

Another bonus is the hours are added on to my other job, so it's considered as one full-time position instead of two. My benefits start on November 1st and it can't come soon enough.

It's getting real crazy on the sports end of things as well. The volleyball, girls swim, cross country and girls soccer are all in playoff contention, which means more work along with the oncoming winter sports season. What's been the real bitch is this junior football parent who keeps bugging me to run his coaches' recaps -- despite their kids getting their asses kicked by 20 to 30 points every damn game.

As if folks are running to their box or the store to pick up a copy to find out how the kids did: "Damnit! They lost again! When will they win?? When, Lord, when?!?!?"

It's as bad as the girls golf coach writing a bitchy e-mail about not getting their first contest in the paper earlier this season. I feel like saying "IT'S GIRLS GOLF! KNOW YOUR ROLE AND SHUT YOUR MOUTH DRAMA QUEEN!!"

There was an incident at the league tournament yesterday when one of his kids broke a rule, but it was a simple rule and there were no coaches or officials around to help her out, plus he was one of the last to know, which is ridiculous. The rule she broke comes with an automatic disqualification, so
he should be one of the first to know, right? Wrong.

Still, he had to come down and talk about it, because it was an issue that was "sensitive" and couldn't be handled over the phone or an e-mail. I didn't mind because I needed a description of the rule, but if we had to handle sensitive issues and problems with kid gloves, we don't even need to bother writing anything.

That's the crutch of covering high school sports: You're writing about someone's kid and if they don't like what you said, they'll do everything in their power to raise some hell about it. They go after coaches who don't make their kid the "star" of the team when the kid has no business being on the field, so I won' t be surprised if they burn us on the stake anytime soon.

Turning to other matters, how 'bout them Hawks? 4-2 and an opportunity for revenge against Dallas on Sunday. I can't wait. What really sucks is not having Hamelin in the lineup after the incident in Pioneer Square.

That place is pretty dangerous anyways. There's always a story or two every year of someone getting murdered, and it's probably for the better if players can't hang out there. But they can still go antiquing!

I'd bitch about the Cougars, but that would be wasted air. They're young, and with Derting out, it's hard for us to stop anybody, so it's the Apple Cup and wait until next year.

I'm done. I'll try to get back on this on a more frequent rate, but you know how that go.

Peace!
